Crabgrass is a summer annual grassy weed. The seed begins to germinate in the spring when the soil temperatures reach the upper 50 degree level. Contrary to popular belief crabgrass does not all simultaneously jump from the ground the day the forsythia blooms. Crabgrass begins to germinate when the soil is warm and does so throughout much of the summer. The first hard frost kills the crabgrass leaving bare spots where this grassy weed has crowded out your desirable grass.
Delaying application until mid/late April can be of benefit. In simple terms crabgrass preventers form a vaporous barrier over the surface of the soil. This barrier prevents successful establishment of grassy weeds (and germinated grass seed which has not germinated – CAUTION). Over time the barrier is broken down by moisture, temperature, and microbial activity.
In the month of May of 2016 we had 23 days of rainfall, so folks who put down a crabgrass preventer were unpleasantly surprised by a bumper crop of crabgrass by mid-summer. The excessive rain broke down the barrier prematurely.
The later you put your preventer down the longer it lasts. Crabgrass preventers usually last 10 to 14 weeks depending on which type you apply. Of course if you put the preventer down too late lots of crabgrass will have already slipped though the cracks.
